Constantin Brâncuși, the Romanian-born patriarch of modern sculpture, was a man who chiseled life down to its elegant essence. He famously declared, "Simplicity is complexity resolved," a motto embodied in his gleaming, abstract forms that often baffled customs officials. One official famously mistook his "Bird in Space" for kitchenware, sparking a legal battle that redefined art itself. A character as carved as his sculptures, Brâncuși sported a long beard and a "gnome-like cap" in his later years. Rumor has it he walked most of the way from Bucharest to Paris and, as a teen, crafted a violin from a vegetable crate just to prove a point.
